2023 Giving Annual Roundup

In 2023, the Do Your Best initiative continues. The effort that we took was to donate to, shed light on and learn about organizations related to the goals of improving our society and natural environment.

Coral Reef Alliance

Coral Reef Alliance

The ocean’s coral reefs are beautiful and colorful natural wonders that attract millions of scuba trips every year. But they have an environmental significance way beyond their beauty.

Coral reefs slow coastal erosion by reducing the impact of incoming waves, they store carbon that would otherwise circulate in our atmosphere, provide compounds that can be used in medicines and are a home for many types of marine life.

However, a number of human activities threaten coral reefs including ships dropping anchor, blast fishing, oil spills, dredging, and coastal development among others.

Coral Reef Alliance is the largest NGO related to coral reef conservation. They work with local communities and governments to learn about reefs, monitor their health, and launch projects for reef conservation. For all of these reasons, we’ve decided to support the work that they do. You can click here to learn more about them and consider donating

Seniors Fight Back

Seniors Fight Back

After a string of news stories that saw elderly Asian citizens assaulted while going about their daily activities, a group of strangers got together to teach seniors a FREE self-defense class.

Since that first class, they’ve taught 26 more classes to 5,000 members of the AAPI community.

The amazing work that they do earned them the 2022 Nonprofit of the Year from the California State Legislature.

From the organization

Each senior is someone’s grandparent, parent, brother, sister, friend, or loved one. We strive to protect and defend our elders by sharing tools, knowledge, and resources.

This program was formed to provide FREE self-defense classes for AAPI seniors and anyone 18+ are able to attend.

We’re proud to support the work that they do. Click here to learn more, see upcoming classes and donate.

Foothill Family Shelter

Foothill Family Shelter

Los Angeles county experienced a 10% year over year rise in homelessness in 2023 that saw an estimated 75,518 people without housing on any given night. That figure may even be lower than the true number for statistical and behavioral reasons

Rather than just provide food and shelter, Foothill Family Shelter provides families with a 2 bedroom apartment with free utilities along with an individualized case plan to help them transition to their own housing. They address other barriers by having individuals set aside income to cover case management, therapy and unemployment services.

Through these efforts, Foothill Family Shelter has achieved a 79% success rate at transitioning individuals from being unhoused to living independently. They've been so successful in fact, that they're celebrating their 40th anniversary and in conjunction, are trying to raise 140,000 to put more families on a journey to independent housing.
